It is hard to
believe that it has been 25 years and 10 sequels since The Fast and the
Furious was released in theaters, surprising everyone by the massive
cultural moment it created while also worrying many with the rowdiness of the
opening weekend’s most enthusiastic patrons. I specifically remember wondering who
was actually watching the movie given the large crowd of car owners in the
parking lot, posturing by revving engines and bouncing hydraulics. In celebration
of this anniversary, The Fast and the Furious was re-released in
theaters along with this newly remastered 4K Ultra HD/Blu-ray disc, featuring Dolby
Atmos and Dolby Vision. The disc also comes with all new extras, in addition to
over two hours of previously released content.
The plot of The
Fast and the Furious is basically just a car-influenced remake of Point
Break, though it has had much more of a lasting cultural impact despite the
likelihood of it causing déjà vu for any viewer of the 1980s classic. In the
film, an undercover cop named Brian O'Conner (Walker) attempts to infiltrate a
street racing crew to investigate a series of hijackings. This assignment is
complicated when Brian develops a complex friendship with the group's leader,
Dominic Toretto (Diesel), while also becoming romantically entangled with his
sister, Mia (Jordana Brewster). While getting closer to the possible criminal
suspects, Brian also develops a sincere love for the world of street racing,
which is also the reason audiences showed up in droves.
Despite the film
being 25 years old, The Fast and the Furious has never looked better
thanks to the enhancements brought by Dolby Vision. Even more impressive, at
least for me and my home entertainment system, was the use of Dolby Atmos to
bring to life the sound of car engines and squealing tires. Additionally, the
4K anniversary release includes an all-new exclusive retrospective, with never-before-seen
interviews filmed at this past year’s Cannes Film Festival. Vin Diesel,
Michelle Rodriguez, Jordana Brewster, producer Nea Moritz and Meadow Walker are
featured in the retrospective. All of the older special features listed below
are also included in the package, along with extra Blu-ray and digital copies of
the film.
