Maybe I’m just a purist. Or maybe I’m a cynic. Whatever the reason, I just can’t help but feel like the trend of making live action remakes of animated classics is often nothing more than a way to exploit fanbases and squeeze a little more money out of the initial creativity. Part of the problem is likely my views on the business practices of the studio with the white-gloved mouse, who has been the biggest culprit in this unfortunate trend. As I went into the experience of watching the live action How to Train Your Dragon, I was completely aware that it had a difficult task given my preconceived notions, and yet I still found myself won over by the effectiveness of the filmmaking. Is it the same as the animated story in many ways? Yes. But it is a testament to the filmmaking that I still found myself on the edge of my seat during several sequences, despite there being no mystery about what would happen.

I could probably count on one hand the number of female-led buddy action comedies that exist worldwide, so the fact that the Baby Assassins franchise made a third film (not to mention a limited series) is a testament to both the action and the chemistry between its stars. These films manage to play up the goofiness of the characters without ever diminishing the impact of the storyline’s impressive action sequences. With Baby Assassins 3 (originally titled Baby Assassins: Nice Days), there is more action and double the buddy comedy elements when the young assassins are forced into a partnership with another assassin duo. The humor is still present, but this time around it is meshed well with the action sequences, while the first film kept them relatively segregated within the plot. In other words, these films just keep getting better.

I have come to expect very little from Blumhouse, as most films coming from production companies seem to be dumbed down for as broad an audience as possible. In other words, they are currently a bit like the Disney of horror. And while The Woman in the Yard deals with themes that have been utilized by far better films and contains a number of frustratingly predictable twists, often feeling as though the filmmakers assumed the audience had seen few other films of the kind, there is something quietly thoughtful and restrained in this film. That is not something I have come to expect from Blumhouse and was a nice surprise, even if it occurs in a film with a narrative that might have been better suited for a short film.

I enjoy courtroom dramas and am a huge fan of action movies but was immediately skeptical that a hybrid of these two genres would work together when I first heard the premise of Donnie Yen’s latest film. It seemed likely that the clever ways that lawyers defeated bad guys would get in the way of the more direct approach utilized by action heroes, and The Prosecutor ultimately does have to make a choice in the direction the climax will take. This isn’t to say that the two halves of the film’s narrative don’t work together, but one also can imagine that fans of either genre are likely to be a bit disappointed by what is missing rather than excited about what the combination has added.
