        It is hard to believe that it has been 25 years and 10 sequels since The Fast and the Furious was released in theaters, surprising everyone by the massive cultural moment it created while also worrying many with the rowdiness of the opening weekend’s most enthusiastic patrons. I specifically remember wondering who was actually watching the movie given the large crowd of car owners in the parking lot, posturing by revving engines and bouncing hydraulics. In celebration of this anniversary, The Fast and the Furious was re-released in theaters along with this newly remastered 4K Ultra HD/Blu-ray disc, featuring Dolby Atmos and Dolby Vision. The disc also comes with all new extras, in addition to over two hours of previously released content.

        Action films may be one of the hardest genres to convincingly pull off. Even with the largest budgets, it can be difficult to make the fight choreography an exciting spectacle while remaining grounded enough for audiences to believe it is possible. One of the greatest assets an action director can have is the ability to scale things appropriately, and William Kaufman is able to make the budget of Man of War feel much larger than it is with skillful directing. It helps that the screenplay co-written by Kaufman has larger themes represented through the intimate relationships of a handful of characters. Not only is this how lower budget action should be accomplished, but there are also more than a few things the major studios could learn from Man of War.

        It was decades ago that somebody came to the realization that the 1993 action film, Sniper, would make a decent launching point for a series of low-budget films made for TV and home entertainment. There have been 11 of these sequels, the most recent released this year, along with Seven Snipers. Although Seven Snipers does not belong to the Sniper film series, it feels like it may as well have been. Besides returning characters and a loose connection to the first film’s protagonist, the main elements of the Sniper franchise are long-range gunfights and limited budgets. Seven Snipers has no shortage of rifles and takes place at a single location, perfect for budget and providing audiences with what they expect. Unfortunately, the quality is about as impressive as a DTV Sniper film, despite a better cast.

        Ip Man is a historical figure whose life has been pillaged so frequently for cinematic inspiration that it would not be shocking to find that some believe him to be fictional, if only due to the high level of spectacle often used to enhance storytelling. While there have been a handful of biopics more dedicated to facts and realism, just as many elevate the kung fu legend’s skills to near-superhero levels, and Ip Man: Kung Fu Legend belongs to the latter group. This is likely to be a good thing for those desiring an exciting kung fu movie, while it may disappoint those more concerned with realism and historical accuracy.

        If a movie included scenes parodying the direction of modern superhero films, Altered could pass as an unintentionally comedic installment. In other words, Altered is such a bad superhero film that it feels like an intentional attempt to lambast the entire Hollywood genre. Another way of putting it would be to say that this dystopian action film has all the trappings one would expect from something released straight to DVD/Blu-ray/streaming. I’m sure there are some audience members who will find a reason to enjoy the type of spectacle this film provides, but sadly, I was not one of them.
